Chapter R - You're never too far from home Pt 3

NGGG!

Ok I haven't been updating much. Not much has been happening. I'm on holiday. I've been jamming to some older worship songs on stickam.com and spending time at home writing my new novel. You'll see that here sooner or later. It's on my google docs account so I'll make it public soon. It's funny. Trust me.

Anyway.

Holiday. So not much happening. But adventures only happen if you make them happen. So today I decided to have a mini adventure.

Not so long ago, or quite long ago, I was at The Grove for Christmas. If you remember the video of the faux snow some time ago, that's where I was. Well, right next to this place was the Farmer's Market and it has this kind of food court area. A stall there caught my eye and I made a mental note to myself to go there at least once just for the heck of it. And so today I did.

It was the first home styled food outlet I found since I've been here and so I decided to check it out. They had the whole fare - laksa, nasi goreng, mi goreng, roti canai, all sorts of curry... the whole deal. It was run by this Indonesian fellow and I must say the man knows how to cook. It was actually pretty darn decent!

I ordered myself a beef rendang and some cendol.

Tadaaa!! Looks pretty good no?

I was actually surprised he made the nasi kunyit. The kunyit wasn't very strong, but I could tell it was present.

It was very decent. The only thing was that it wasn't spicy enough. I guess the chef had to tame it down for the gwai lou. But it had the original coconut milk creaminess. Sedap.

Dessert!

Looks ok no? The ice was a bit rough. And it wasn't traditional gula melaka. It was something actually pretty close. At first taste it tasted almost exactly alike, but then there's a little different fragrance to it after a while. Close enough.

So there. After 15 months in the States I finally succumbed to my needs and had some good ol' Malaysian food.

Chapter dappy hothers fay

The sequel.

*Cue opening credits*

I'm far away, I'm not in sight,
it is an eighteen hour flight.
I have not cash nor space nor time
so all I'll do is write this rhyme.
I've given my dear Mum her share
and figure that it's only fair
to use what skill I still possess
and come up with more thankfulness,
forced into rhyme for all to see
and get a laugh or two or three.
Dad's not into the rhyming word
which makes this all the more absurd.
But what the heck, I'll have a go,
it might just work, we'll never know.

The one thing I can't comprehend
is how my dad can truly spend
hours, hours back to back
reading from a giant stack
of books that I don't understand.
He really does deserve a hand.
It is a trait I do respect
but one that I, for now, reject.
I don't think that my scrawny rear
can sit that long and live, I fear.

Dad's not the most outgoing type,
he's not one to join in the hype
of things that artsy people do
and most of what I am into
like music, movies, games or art
so he just tends to not take part.
Looking back some years ago
I recognise, and now I know
that while Dad didn't catch my style
he spent a pretty darn long while
taking both his children to
the things that we wanted to do.
The stuff the two of us enjoyed
was stuff that I think he'd avoid.
Like ACE VENTURA at the screens -
while we'd be laughing at the scenes
amidst the noisy cheering crowd
he'd be asleep and snoring loud.

While you might think that's no big deal
if you know dad, you'll know it's real
how much a loving thing it is
for all those many instances
where he has taken time to be
with my brother and with me.

He may not be a superdad
but I am still incredibly glad.
He's my dad and so I can
loudly proclaim - Dad. He's the man.
